Panic Attacks Panic attacks are sudden episodes of intense fear. Some Common Symptoms:
physical: shortness of breath, chest pain, heart palpitations, dizziness, abdominal distress, trembling, cold hands thinking: "I'm dying" "I'm having a heart attack" "I'm going to pass out" feeling: out of control, trapped, the need to flee
Sometimes panic episodes can occur in certain situations (at a store, in large crowds, driving over bridges, while flying, in high places). Fear of having another panic episode can then become more complicated by avoiding those places or experiences. This may lead to the development of a phobia--intense fear and avoidance of similar situations--that can limit activities and enjoyment in life. A physician should be consulted to eliminate any physical cause of symptoms and to prescribe medication, if indicated. Counselors can help sufferers learn new ways of coping with anxiety that can significantly reduce or eliminate attacks.
